In honoring Dr. King’s legacy, the Utah Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Commission hosted an art contest for the official state decal of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. license plate. With an accompanying slogan of “Many Stories, One Utah,” the selected artwork promotes human rights and was designed by Eleanor Smith, a then senior at Timpview High School.

Show your support and order the new Utah Martin Luther King Jr. License plate now available at Utah DMVs. All you need to get started is your current license plate number and the last four digits of your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). Then, follow the simple steps below to get your special group plate mailed right to your door.

STEPS TO Request YOUR LICENSE PLATE

STEP 1.

Visit dmv.utah.gov.

STEP 2.

Click on “E-Services” at the top of the page.

STEP 3.

Select "Order License Plates".

STEP 4.

Submit your current license plate number, last name, zip code and the last four digits of your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).

STEP 5.

Select “Special Group Plate” from the drop down menu, and then under “Plate Type” scroll down to select:

Martin Luther King, Jr. Recognition Special Group Plate

STEP 6.

Pay the Special Group Plate fees ($21) to complete your order.

Many Stories, One Utah License Plate Press Event

Utah’s work toward an MLK-themed license plate dates back to 2012. A 2020 bill led by Rep. Sandra Hollins and Sen. Luz Escamilla then paved the way for a license plate to recognize Dr. Martin Luther King’s work and life.

The Commission hosted a special press event with Gov. Spencer J. Cox and multiple community partners to celebrate the license plate unveiling.

This license plate design was inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream for a world that values and celebrates differences. With that dream in mind, I created a design that symbolizes the many unique voices of Utah coming together in love and unity. I hope that people will use this license plate to share a message of equality, and I hope that everyone who sees the plate feels welcomed and accepted by their community.

Legislative Support

The license plate has long been a goal for the Utah Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Commission, initially being proposed by the commission in 2012 and supported by former Rep. Rebecca Chavez-Houck and Sen. Howard Stephenson. The bill for the special group license plate, which was sponsored by Rep. Sandra Hollins and Sen. Luz Escamilla, passed in 2020. A huge thank you to former Rep. Chavez-Houck, Rep. Hollins and Sen. Escamilla on this monumental accomplishment to the community and the State of Utah.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. summoned the best qualities that have guided and sustained the American spirit while strengthening our nation’s commitment of equality, justice, freedom, and peace. He awakened the necessary goodness of all people and led a nonviolent movement that enriched our moral purpose as a nation. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. raised the consciousness of our country through his personal dream where all people are judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. I believe this license plate will show that we are about the content of one’s character, and not the color of one’s skin. This license plate will show our nation that Utah is committed to equality, freedom, justice and peace!
