The Huynh-Phung Family
Immigrated from Vietnam
Taylorsville, UT
From left to right: Lee, Thao, Stephen, Lou
Thao and her three sons, Lee, Lou and Stephen know firsthand how moving to a new place can be quite a challenging journey at first. Thao, who came from Dalat, Vietnam, raised Lee in her hometown and moved to Saigon where Lou was raised. In response to the Vietnam War, Thao and her two sons at the time moved to Delta, Colorado, where Stephen was born and raised, until moving to Utah. From growing up in a Vietnamese boarding school, exploring the markets of Vietnam, to roaming freely around the small snowy town of Delta, Colorado, and playing sports in West Valley City, Utah, Thao and her family have had a variety of experiences. With a blend of Vietnamese cultural traditions and American ones, the Huynh-Phung family found their place of belonging in Utah.
Learn About Each of Their Stories
“Sometimes facing the challenges of being unique and different are really opportunities, opportunities to develop resilience, opportunities to really understand who you are, and to develop some of that pride and love for your own heritage. I know at an early age, I hated feeling different. But as I got older, I was able to embrace that, and learn that that was a very important part of who I was. And so for my children, I see that in them as well. [Though,] they [might] not [have] some of the challenges that I grew up with, I feel like that’s really helped me to develop the resilience that I see a lot of our youth today may benefit from.”

Interpretation may lead to slight variations between spoken content and its written representation. Efforts are made to capture meaning accurately, but minor differences can occur due to language dynamics. Written quotes are approximations of the original spoken dialogue. All quotes that contain square brackets (i.e. “[]”) indicate a direct quote that has been edited to fit the surrounding information and/or add context that does not show up within the scope of the quote and has been approved by their respective speaker.
