As America nears its 250th anniversary, we want to shine a spotlight on the stories of individuals and families who contribute to the mosaic of our thriving state and nation. Our stories reveal the triumphs, sacrifices, and aspirations that have shaped lives and communities, offering a lens through which we can better understand what it means to be part of this American journey. The complexities of what makes each of us unique, whether we’ve been in Utah our whole lives or we’re starting fresh, the cultural blending of our State and nation is the definition of the American experience.
As part of Utah’s America250 initiative, people across the state have been invited to reflect on key questions about the nation’s history, their family’s experiences, and their hopes for the future.

“On July 4, 2026, our nation will commemorate and celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The journey toward this historic milestone is an opportunity to pause and reflect on our nation’s past, honor the contributions of all Americans, and look ahead toward the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond.”
As we reflect back on some of our storytellers’ experiences, we are reminded of the Huynh-Phung, Barahona, and Castaño families, which reveal the strength and determination of New Americans and their pursuit of opportunity. Thao Huynh and her family have bridged Vietnamese traditions with American culture, showcasing the challenges and beauty of adapting to a new home. Similarly, the Barahona family’s journey from Honduras shows the sacrifices made for loved ones and the desire to preserve cultural heritage while embracing a new future in the United States. For the Castaño family, the dedication of Daniel in raising his children and celebrating their achievements captures the universal hope for a better future, a hope that all Americans cherish and can resonate with.

Utah’s cultural richness blossoms through “Chosen Home” stories, such as those of Dr. Richard Ferguson and Eli Madrigal, which capture the heart of what it means to build a life in a new place. Dr. Ferguson speaks to the importance of finding and creating community—a reminder that no matter where you come from, connection and support can transform any place into a home. Eli Madrigal, the visionary founder of Rancho Markets, exemplifies grit and innovation, turning years of dedication into a thriving business that serves all stretches of our communities. These stories embody the spirit of perseverance and the power of community, echoing the American ideals of opportunity and belonging.
Equally compelling are our “Homegrown Stories,” like that of Martha Castleton, a retired Air National Guard Wing Command Chief. Raised in Eureka, Utah, she embodies the state’s values of service and community, citing family, public lands, and the welcoming nature of the state as her anchors for what it means to be American. Adrienne Andrews adds another layer of warmth, urging us to embrace one another with her powerful reminder: “We are welcoming, and you are welcome here.”

Magnify Utah has always been a place for everyone to share their stories. It has also become a place to emphasize the shared values of what it means to be an American. It has been home to families within the state and place for them to dream. At the Utah Division of Multicultural Affairs, we celebrate the people that make up our nation, that make Utah such a special place to live. We find beauty in the unity that can arise from understanding and honoring all of our communities and the vibrant story told when we see the relatable humanity in each other.
