Utah’s European Communities

Utah’s European immigrant communities are deeply rooted in our state’s history, bringing traditions and influences from places as far east as Ukraine, along the sea from Greece, Italy and Scotland, and from countries in between. Their stories are varied, rich, and interconnected. Many of these communities are descendants of early settlers, Latter-day Saint pioneers, or miners and railroad workers who were drawn by work opportunities. Now many of these communities are welcoming more recent arrivals, also drawn by hope and opportunity. Celebrate these thriving European communities, who contribute to the state in a variety of ways, by learning more about their traditions and celebrations.

Utah’s Greek Festival and Old Greek Town

Utah’s small-but-mighty Greek community started with the western mining boom that drew immigrants to Utah in the late 1800s. A Greektown village was established near the Rio Grande Depot neighborhood in downtown Salt Lake City. The Greek Orthodox Church on 300 West hosts a lively Greek Festival annually in early September. The festival celebrates early residents and the leaders who continue to carry the torch. That includes various popular restaurants started by and owned by Greek Utahns, the places that introduced Uthans to the well-loved pastrami burger.
